Bristol compressors

Hello guys,

A club I'm loosely attached to has (had?) a Bristol compressor, apparently
of British orgin. The unit is - apparently - ex. Finnish Navy and orginally
bought as surplus by someone sometime for some unknown purpose. Anyway, it
has served well until. The incident has been described to me as an
"explosion" but I suppose it was more like a lot of mechanical noice.
Apparently we have a blown head, some bent valves and possibly an pooped
crank. Anyway, the compressor is not compressing any more.

Now, I have been asked to sound this board for advice whether someone might
know of someone still holding spares to this unit. I know it will probably
be cheaper and definitely easier to just buy a new compressor, but the guys
just bought a new boat....

Anyway, if anyone has any ideas, they are most welcome.

Regards,

timo

Sorry to hear of this Timo. I normally know of compressor manufacturers from
my industrial background but the Bristol brand doesn't sound familiar. A
quick Google search indicates that they may actually be American.

Is the new boat Ila's? He pointed out the type he wanted in the harbour.

Cliff.

Cliff.
No,

The "new" boat belongs to a club orginally founded by Ila in conjunction to
his diving business some years ago. Currently, neither myself nor Ila have
nothing officially to do with said club. I use their boat every now and
then, however, so promised to help out if possible.

Bristol compressors were indeed made in Bristol, they were bought out by
Hamworthy. Which model is it? The 4S7 (4 Stage 7cfm) was a popular model.
I have recently bought a reconditioned unit from
http://www.compressorconsultants.co.uk/ who are the UK agents. I might have
a few bits & pieces lying about. HTH

I recently sold a 3.5CFM Bristol compressor which gave me good service for
two years (I upgraded to a 5cfm unit).

I bought this unit from a professional compressor engineer who re-builds,
services, repairs and sells many makes & models of compressor, from small
portable units to very large commercial & industrial compressors and has
been doing so for many years.

His name is Colin Bruce, based in Horsham, West Sussex.. I'm sure that he
can either supply the parts or could rebuild your unit (he often fixes
compressors from overseas as well).

Please contact me off-list and I will give you his contact details.

Tony.

Bristol Compressors were probably the most common compressor to be
made in the UK. They were taken over by Hamworthy, and now by Bellis
& Morcom.

Parts are avaiable from Bellis & Morcom in the UK, or by other
companies in the USA such as American Bristol. (Similar name but not
much connection to Bellis over here).

Parts are horrifically expensive if you need to replace items such as
cranks, rods & pistons.

Most parts for the models 4s7 (a 7 cfm displacement but 5 cfm output)
, 4 s 16 (10 - 12 cfm output) and the 4s 24 (18 cfm output) are
still available.

If you let me have the number which will be on the side of the block
normally on a small red plate, i can give you some prices on this
forum for parts. I still have some pricelists.

If it has a separate cooler fan mounted inside the flywheel it is a
4s16 or 4s24, the fan will often be yellow. Parts for the 24
including pistons and crank are available, but may write the machine
off.

Good luck. Oh if you want any manuals let me know. I can possibly
email them to you...........

OK,

I'll talk to the guy who is supposed to fix it. I just heard yesterday, that
it may only need some new valves and piston rings. But I'll find out.

Help! We're in N Scotland with a 4S16 which has a 3rd4th stage problem.
I've got manual & parts list back in London & am reluctant to start
taking it apart blind. Anybody out there who could email me manual
and/or parts list? My email address is ***@garbet.net
Thanks
Andy

Can't help with that, but Bristol compressors were taken over by
Hamworthy a couple of years back. You could try ringing someone there,
they were very very helpful to me in the past when I contacted them over
some spares for Bristol.
