Thinking of getting a new wing for my 12Ltr twin set.

Came across the SEAC ICARO Tech BCD wihich has a naval aviation alloy
backplate but I have been told by other professional technical divers
that the Aluminium backplate is not as good / strong as a Stainless
steel backplate.

In time I may be going for a Re-Breather and would like to keep the BCD
if it lasts that long or when funds are available for the Re-Breather.

Any comments or advice welcomed

I've been using an AL plate for the last 4 years, roughly a thousand
dives on it and it is showing no signs of giving up. I'm still even on
my original webbing, although that will definitly get replaced before I
use it next.

An AL plate makes a lot more sense if you are going to be carting it all
over the world, baggage weight it precious.

Best option, get one in each flavour, they're cheap enough now. Use the
steel when you don't have to worry about allowances and the Ally for travel.

It's not as strong. The question, however, is whether it is strong enough.
The difference between an aluminum plate and a steel one is more a matter of
weight out of the water and buoyancy in it than of strength.

Out of interest, what about the plastic backplates? Wouldn't they be lighter
for travel? Didn't the tek wings come with a black plastic one?

A plastic backplate is what you used to use with an ABLJ

I still have a couple.
One is for twin 7s and had a manifold bar with an A-clamp
on each end.

No, I think the idea here was something like this:

If you're after a UK source of plastic backplates, Sea&Sea sell a very nice
one manufactured in the States by DiveRite. Just about any UK dive shop
should be able to order it in for you. Personally I prefer aluminium
backplates - I have a DiveRite aluminium plate which is ideal for travel.
